Senior home safety & aging in place service
A familiar staircase can become harder to use when the steps fade into the shadows or the rail no longer feels firm. Tell us which part of the trip worries you, and we’ll help you choose a practical first step.
Why this service
The rooms you use are part of your day: a bedroom upstairs, the laundry downstairs, the landing where you pause to turn. When the stairs start to take more thought, it can change how comfortably you move around the home you know.
We begin with that particular moment. You may be searching for the next step in dim light, reaching for a rail that moves, or finding that the edge of one tread blends into the next. A clearer view and a suitable handhold are worth looking at together.
We look at what would help in that part of the route. An existing rail may only need tightening, while a first or second wall-mounted rail can add a handhold where one is missing. If the concern is a slippery finish or loose carpet, we explain the suitable options and any repair needed before adding products.
If you are arranging help for a parent, ask what they notice on the stairs and what they would find useful. A photo or a recommendation they want to share can help. We also look at the approach and landings: shoes, stored items and trailing cords can interrupt an otherwise clear route.
Positions checked from both ends of the flight.
Minor tightening when one existing rail is suitable.
A written scope and price, with other work explained.
Ready to move forward?
Ready when you are. Send a few details about the stairs and we’ll call to talk through the next step. Asking costs nothing.

Planning the service
Four motion-activated lights that shine down on the steps, supplied and installed, plus minor tightening on one suitable existing handrail.
Mounting surfaces, sensor coverage and the route can affect the visit length. We test the lights from both ends and show you how to care for them.
One supplied straight-run metal handrail up to 10 feet on a suitable wall; $30 for each additional foot. Mounting, finish and repairs quoted separately.
The rail’s length, wall condition and mounting requirements can affect the schedule. We confirm the expected visit length with your quote.
One supplied straight-run hardwood handrail up to 10 feet; $40 for each additional foot. Matching profile, finish and site conditions may add cost.
Matching the profile and finish, wall preparation and drying time can affect the schedule.
Check one accessible existing rail and tighten suitable fasteners from $95. Loose fixings or wall damage needing repair quoted separately.
A photo helps us decide whether minor tightening is enough or a repair needs a longer visit.
Compatible non-slip treatment on one standard stair flight after checking the current tread finish. Damaged carpet, loose treads and structural repairs excluded.
Preparation and adhesion time depend on stair surface and flight length.
High-contrast strips on one compatible flight to improve the visibility of step edges. Repairs and loose carpet are separate.
Final time depends on number of steps and surface preparation.
Up to three compatible plug-in motion lights in a nearby hallway; no wiring or new outlets.
Power outlet locations and light coverage determine suitability.
A broader set of coordinated improvements within the separate package scope. New handrails are outside that package.
We agree on the visit length once the coordinated work and route have been reviewed.
See the Stair & Hallway package : Stair & Hallway Safety packagePrices are for the job described. We confirm the full cost in writing before any work begins.
Have an occupational therapist’s recommendation for handrail placement? Send it with your photos so we can plan the installation around that guidance.
If the next step calls for an electrician, plumber or remodeling contractor, we’ll explain who is needed and why before you commit to the work.
What happens next
Choose your concern and, if possible, add photos of the flight, both landings and the existing rail.
We review surfaces, light coverage and rail condition, then send a written price for the agreed scope.
We install the agreed products, make suitable minor adjustments and explain the care and next steps.
Common questions
Answers to help you choose a first step and understand the work before you request it.
Yes. We install a standard wall-mounted handrail along a straight stair run when the wall can support it. This can be a first handrail or a second one on the other side. Send a photo and we’ll quote the length, product, finish and mounting conditions.
An aluminum or metal rail starts at $500 per rail; a solid hardwood option to complement existing woodwork starts at $600 per rail. The rail itself is included. Curved or complex rail systems, wall rebuilding, guardrails, structural stair repair and hardwired lighting need the appropriate specialist.
It's four motion-activated lights that shine down on the steps, supplied and installed, plus minor tightening of one suitable existing handrail. It starts at $135. We agree on where the lights go after seeing photos of your stairs and landings. A long flight or a turn may need more than four lights, and we'll quote that before you decide. New handrails, structural stair repair and hardwired electrical work are separate.
No. If the stairs are your main concern, we can start there. A whole-home review is optional when you want to prioritize several areas.
If several rooms have become harder to use, or you want help choosing what comes first, a Whole Home Safety Assessment gives you a written plan. You do not have to book one before requesting this stair service.
Wireless lights add useful light near the steps, but do not replace the staircase’s main lighting. Keep the whole flight and both landings well lit, with usable switches at the top and bottom.
We choose positions for the flight, turns, mounting surfaces and the supplied model’s sensor coverage, then test activation and visibility from both directions. A long flight or a turn may need more lights. Glare or a dark landing may need a different solution. National Institute on Aging home fall-prevention guidance explains why both secure handrails and good lighting matter.
A suitable existing rail can be checked and tightened from $95 (typically 30–45 minutes), where fixings and wall supports are sound. Minor tightening is included with the separate lighting setup; damaged or poorly anchored rails need a separate repair quote or a specialist.
If a rail moves when you lean on it, please don’t rely on it until it has been checked. Call (919) 516-9005. If it still moves after tightening, we explain why and quote proper re-anchoring where suitable. We do not certify an existing rail as load-rated; damaged structure or more involved repairs need the appropriate specialist.
Secure, easy-to-grip rails on both sides give someone a handhold whichever direction they are travelling. They can be especially useful when one side is easier to reach or grip than the other. A wide decorative rail may look substantial but still be awkward to hold.
A suitable contrast strip may make the edge easier to distinguish, while an appropriate traction product can improve the existing surface. The right choice depends on the finish, wear and how the stairs are used; we quote these changes after seeing the steps.
Loose carpet, raised tape edges, uneven treads or damaged flooring need attention of their own. We do not cover up a repair problem with a strip. A photo of the full flight and a close-up of the area are useful starting points.
Wireless lights need fresh batteries or a recharge now and then. We’ll show you how, and if you’d rather not think about it, our Home Maintenance Plan checks stair and night lights every quarter.
Follow the supplied model’s care instructions and check that it still activates before you reach the steps. We can review a suitable wall mounting position beside carpeted stairs, keeping lights and charging leads out of the walking route. Loose carpet needs its own repair. Under the maintenance plan, replacement batteries are billed at cost or supplied by you.
No. Those are specialist jobs, and we’d rather point you to the right company than guess. What we can do is make the stairs you use now easier to see and hold onto.
If stairs are becoming too hard to manage, ask your doctor or an occupational therapist what would help most.
