Families & adult children aging in place advocate
Helping a parent stay at home can bring a lot of questions. You can explore home safety assessments and modification options with us, and with your loved one’s okay, stay involved every step of the way.
Home safety planning for parents
Your parent may want to keep doing things their own way, while you’re wondering how to help. Perhaps the shower has become difficult, or they seem hesitant on the stairs. You do not need to have the answer before you reach out.
If several rooms raise questions, a Whole Home Safety Assessment helps you decide what needs attention first. If one change is already clear, like a grab bar by the shower, you can ask for that home modification directly. We’ll help you choose a starting point that makes sense for your parent.
When to request a home safety visit
Perhaps your parent has mentioned that the stairs are getting harder. Or a fall or near fall has left your family feeling shaken. You may be preparing for their return home from hospital or rehab. You may simply want to make their home easier to use before their needs change.
Ask what your parent wants to keep doing at home. We can review the spaces they use most and explain home modifications that could support those routines. One concern is enough to start a conversation. For questions about their balance, recovery or the medical causes of a fall, turn to their healthcare, OT or PT professional.
Local & long-distance family support

Living elsewhere does not have to keep you out of the loop. We can include you in a call and keep you updated in the way your parent is comfortable with.
Have an OT or PT recommendation already? Share what your parent wants us to see. We can explain which home modifications we can handle and when another professional is needed.
Keeping everyone in the conversation
It can be hard to help without feeling as though you’re taking over. We agree on who should be included from the start. You’ll know when to expect an update, and your parent will know what is being shared.

Ask about the change you have in mind, from a fixed grab bar to easier entry access. We’ll confirm the scope and price before work begins.

A few answers to help you start the conversation, stay involved from a distance and find the right support.
Start with a routine your parent wants to keep doing. Ask what has become harder and what would make life easier. Leave room for their ideas, rather than opening with a list of things you think are unsafe.
A brighter hallway or a grab bar in one spot may feel more manageable than changing several rooms at once. Triangle Home Safety keeps your parent involved and lets them choose who joins the conversation.
Yes. You can arrange the assessment from another city or state and, with your parent’s permission, join by phone or a video call such as Zoom. You can use your laptop, tablet or phone to take part without traveling here.
Before the visit, we’ll agree on how you’ll join and how to share the written plan with you. Your parent stays involved in the conversation and decisions about their home.
You can share recommendations from an occupational therapist (OT) or physical therapist (PT) when you have permission to do so. For example, an OT may have specified a fixed grab bar’s position, length or orientation; we can use that information when discussing the requested installation.
We still check the wall, mounting surface and product requirements before agreeing to the work. Questions about transfer technique or changes to a clinical recommendation go back to the recommending professional.
A Return Home Safety Visit helps you review the entrance, bathroom and routes your loved one will use after hospital or rehab. The visit can take place before they come home or shortly afterward.
We focus on home safety changes that fit the transition, such as lighting, support and clear pathways. The visit does not provide medical clearance or replace guidance from your healthcare, OT or PT professional.
You do not have to organize every routine check for a parent yourself. Our Home Maintenance Plan brings a standard seven-point checklist to one visit each quarter.
With the homeowner’s permission, you can receive a brief update about completed tasks and any concerns that need further attention. You pay one visit at a time and can cancel before the next visit; caregiving and emergency support remain separate arrangements.
If your parent is already a Triangle Home Safety customer, an Annual Home Safety Checkup offers a planned time to revisit earlier improvements and talk about what has changed. It can help your family move from wondering whether the home still fits their routines to knowing what deserves attention next.
We review prior work and new home safety concerns, explain the priorities and share findings with family when the homeowner agrees. It is a yearly review of the home environment; new products and modification work are quoted separately. If a concern arises sooner, contact us rather than waiting for the next annual visit.
